The bootiful game! With his performance-enhancing footwear (on loan from the spirit of 1930s star Dead-Shot Keen), Billy Dane could have led England to a #WorldCupFinal. Mike Western was the cover artist.

Billy’s Boots appeared in Scorcher, Tiger and Eagle before transferring to Roy of the Rovers in the late 1980s. Western had drawn the very first episode and returned to the strip following John Gillatt’s long and distinguished run towards the end.

This issue of ROTR included features on two of the following year’s World Cup stars, Gary Lineker and Chris Waddle. I think the illustrations on the Waddle story are the work of former Roy artist David Sque.
