As a strip that graced the front cover of Whizzer and Chips for more than one and a half decades, Mike Lacey's Sid's Snake is often an indicator of changing trends and interests of the kids of the 1970s and early 1980s.

Every now and then, during its earlier years, Sid and Slippy would go to a football match, and Slippy would get involved from the terraces - providing a view above other fans' heads, for example, or using his long neck to influence the game in some way. This cover from 1984 is a sign of the changing times - in the 1983/84 season, ITV and BBC started showing live league football games for the first time since the 1960s.
