On this day, 7 June 1986 ... 'Whilst playing an exhibition match in the Middle-Eastern state of Basran, Roy and the Rovers found themselves trapped in a full-scale revolution. Having escaped from the stadium, the Rovers had reached the grounds of the British Embassy, in a helicopter piloted by Roy ...'

Roy of the Rovers didn't often start this way, as far as I can remember. The summer of 1986 was one of Melchester's more memorable close seasons as, instead of their usual cricket matches and prestigious testimonials, the boys in red and yellow (without an opportunity even to change out of their skimpy little 80s shorts) became embroiled in a full-scale Arab state revolution. The Basran story lasted several weeks and had the feel of a series of 24 before its time. This one was going to escalate, and not in a good way. We'll come back to the storyline in a few weeks' time ...
