On this day, 7 April 1984 … Here’s another lovely issue of the innovative School Fun, a comic possibly let down by the fact that not many kids in 1983 or 1984 could really see the connection between ‘School’ and ‘Fun’, but nevertheless packed with clever strips in the full-on cock-a-snook attitude of the very best of IPC’s humour comics. I find School Fun particularly interesting because it showcases a number of artists with whom I’m unfamiliar from my own reading days, but who represent a new wave of talented creators who would define the look of the funnies from the mid-1980s onwards. David Mostyn leads the way with another of his brilliant gatefold covers and the marvellous E.T.T. Extra Terrestrial Teacher on the centre pages, while, Steve Bright, Mitch, Keith Reynolds and Pete Dredge are also good examples of the new school.
