On this day, 10 April 1982: Roy of the Rovers

Cover artwork: David Sque

On this day, 10 April 1982 … Aw, what a lovely cover here celebrating Roy Race’s return to Melchester Rovers after recovering from being shot. Rovers lost this game to Darlton – their first defeat of the season, after 34 games – but were still happily on track for promotion back to the old First Division. Sometimes one has to abandon all cynicism and meta-irony and just enjoy this moment with a big grin like those of Mervyn Wallace, Noel Baxter, Paco Diaz, Jimmy Slade and Blackie Gray – great bunch of lads, at the end of the day.
