On this day, 4 October 1986: Buster

Cover artwork: Tom Paterson

On this day, 4 October 1986 … With Tom Paterson drawing the front page lead strip – bold and wacky and colourful – and artists such as Steve Bright, Anthony Hutchings, Jerry Swaffield and Pete Dredge representing a new wave of talent breaking through in humour comics during the 1980s, Buster had developed a striking new look by 1986. Many established characters more than ten years old are still within its pages, including Buster, Chalky, Faceache, X-Ray Specs and Ivor Lott and Tony Broke, and some of the comic’s greatest artists in Paterson, Jack Edward Oliver, Terry Bave,Reg Parlett, Frank McDiarmid, Nigel Edwards, Reg Parlett, Ken Reid, Mike Lacey and Sid Burgon, are still here producing fantastic work – yet this has the feel of a forward-looking comic, with an irreverent, confident feel that wouldn’t have looked too out of place on the newsstands alongside IPC’s recently-launched ‘Viz for kids’, Oink!
